Two heavyweight reports landed this year attempting to cut through the noise around AI in schools: UNESCO's AI and the Future of Education: Disruptions, Dilemmas and Directions, and the OECD's Digital Education Outlook 2026. Read together, they offer a more useful, more specific picture than either the hype or the panic that usually dominates this topic.
The Finding Every Student Should Actually Know
The single most useful result comes from the OECD: students given access to general-purpose AI chatbots produced noticeably higher-quality coursework than peers without access. But that advantage disappeared — and in some cases reversed — the moment the same students sat exams without the AI available. In plain terms: using AI to produce a good-looking assignment and actually building the underlying skill are not the same thing, and only one of them shows up when the tool is taken away.
Most Schools Still Have No Real Rules
UNESCO's companion research, surveying more than 450 schools and universities, found that only around one in ten had established formal guidelines for AI use at all. UNESCO's framing groups AI tools into three tiers of confidence: administrative uses (scheduling, translation) rate highest; teacher-support uses (drafting materials, flagging struggling students) rate moderately; and student-facing generative AI — the chatbots students actually use to help with essays and problem sets — rates as the least mature and most in need of caution. The practical upshot for most students: you are almost certainly navigating this without a clear school-issued rulebook, which makes your own judgment about when AI helps you learn versus when it just produces an output the thing that actually matters.
A Global Access Gap Nobody Is Advertising
Access itself is unevenly distributed. Separate labour-market survey data cited alongside this year's reporting found generative AI tool usage among working-age people at roughly 24.7% in Global North countries versus 14.1% in the Global South — a gap that, if it carries into classrooms as most educators expect, risks becoming a new axis of educational inequality layered on top of older ones.
UNESCO member states convene in Paris from 8–11 September for a follow-up conference specifically on AI in education, where more concrete guidance is expected to emerge. Until then, the most defensible student-level conclusion from both reports is the same one teachers have been saying for years, now with data behind it: AI is a genuinely useful tool for a first draft or a stuck moment, and a genuinely bad substitute for the thinking you still need to be able to do without it.
